Director of Talent

About this Position

The Director of Talent will develop, design and execute programs to bring out the best in our beloved employees and drive business success by ensuring that all employees have the knowledge and tools they need to excel. As a member of the management team, and reporting to Founder and Co-President Duane Peterson, the director will ensure HR programs align with the company’s mission and financial goals; coach managers to excel at selecting, supporting and supervising our awesome people; establish and share best performance management practices across the teams; and measure the success of these efforts toward achieving business goals.This new position will supervise the Office Manager/HR Coordinator and oversee relationships with external recruitment and benefits consulting partners.

Essential Job Functions

Organizational and People Development

  • Directs talent strategy, planning and evaluation processes to ensure that the company has the depth and breadth of talent capability needed to achieve business goals
  • Analyzes performance trends and KPIs to develop and deploy solutions, programs and policies
    Collaborates with department heads to understand business needs relative to hiring, training and development of talent
  • Designs, develops and implements employee training and development programs in support of skill and capability growth
  • Provides guidance, training, and resources to managers to effectively coach & counsel employees on performance and career development
  • Guides and facilitates all activities supporting the development and implementation of Employee Development plans and processes which:
    • Motivate, engage and retain employees
    • Identify training needs for teams and individuals
    • Drive the successful attainment of individual performance goals
    • Achieve increased organizational capability, capacity, and fulfillment of mission and objectives
    • Support higher levels of self-actualization and fulfillment for all employees
  • As needed, coaches all levels of employees on career growth, personal development, and performance

Employee Relations

  • Stays attuned to pulse of employees through personal interaction, surveys, and meetings
  • Provides employee relations support to entire SunCommon community; promoting direct communications and using the principles of self-management and accountability
  • Serves as a primary resource to managers in developing and maintaining positive employee relations in compliance with SunCommon policies and relevant laws
  • Handles difficult inquiries/situations through direct personal action or refers to the appropriate individual; conducts effective, thorough and objective investigations

Employee Communication and Community Support

  • Helps maintain and deepen company culture – working with joy, having high performance standards, holding each other accountable and being driven by our mission
  • Supports consistent & clear communication regarding HR programs, policies, updates, and trainings
  • Assists in the facilitation of company-wide meetings, helping to identify content, create agendas, and manage meeting flow
  • Networks with peers in local companies, as well as those who share our commitment to corporate and social responsibility

Staffing Management

  • Oversees performance of outsourced recruitment partner
  • Drives workforce planning process with managers, including:
    • Creating a workforce plan tied to Company strategic plan
    • Identifying future staffing needs gaps and development of action plans to bridge gaps
    • Developing job descriptions

Compensation and Benefits

In collaboration with management team:

  • Sets total compensation strategy for the organization
  • Establishes pay ranges for all positions
  • Conducts annual review of benefits and compensation to ensure alignment with mission and values

Job Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • B.S. degree in a related field (Business Administration, HR, Psychology)
  • Minimum 10 years as an HR Generalist or Business Partner in a mission-driven business, with demonstrated experience in the following areas:
    • Development and delivery of policies and programs in support of employee and company success, and aligned with company values
    • Organizational development initiatives within a growing fast-paced, entrepreneurial and changing environment
    • Development and execution of talent development programs including skills training, leadership coaching, and organizational development
    • Benefits and compensation strategy and structure
    • Delivery of effective employee relations and communications
    • Development of meaningful KPIs

Skills, Abilities and Attributes

  • Ability to assess and address enterprise-wide priorities, synergies and programs for the effects on financial results
  • Excellent coaching, employee development and training skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with all levels of employees
  • Project management skills
  • Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Ability to maintain confidential data
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to organize, summarize, and clearly present data in numerical and other visual forms
  • Creative, confident, and with a healthy sense of humor
